As you may have heard by now, Disney purchased LucasArts and now holds the rights to the Star Wars franchise. You may also have noticed that we haven’t been talking much about this because it’s all over the internet and there are so many rumors running wild, it is giving me a headache. That being said, I’m glad to report that we can finally squash one of the major rumors and move on to the next.
Matthew Vaughn has been the talk of the town the past few days because many believed he was going to be the director for the next Star Wars film. There were some decent theories as to why he dropped out of X-Men and the front runner seemed like it was so he could start working on Episode VII which is due out in 2015. However this is not the case after all and today Mark Millar has come to the rescue and discussed with CBR the real reason as to why Vaughn dropped out suddenly on X-Men.
In a nut shell, Vaughn dropped out so that he can focus on getting the ball rolling for another Millar comic adaptation called Secret Service. Here is what Millar had to say regarding it
What we’re doing is that ‘Kick-Ass 2′ is filming now, and next year we’ll start production on ‘Secret Service’ which I did with Dave Gibbons, and Matthew and I have been talking about that for years. We thought Matthew was going to do X-Men first, but we found out there were actually a few imitators of ‘Secret Service’ in the works. People think you’re lying when you say you’re not trying to get your comics made into movies so quickly, but the two reasons it happens like that is first because it’s the best ad for the comic you’ll ever have. And for me, selling the book is the most important thing. The second reason is because people are always trying to rip you off. Somebody will start to work on a spec screenplay about your idea. There are three other projects I know of now about a James Bond kind of guy taking a street kid and turning him into a spy. Three screenplays were already going through Hollywood about this! So Matthew and I said, ‘F*ck this. We’re not letting anyone steal our ideas.
Seems logical enough and it just so happens that Mark Hamill is set to star in the film as well.
This news can, for the most part, debunk all the rumors that Vaughn would be the next guy to bring us Star Wars, however I guess technically we can’t rule him out until someone else is officially announced as director. Logically it just doesn’t seem possible that Vaughn would have time to start and finish Secret Service and do Star Wars Episode VII in about 2 years.
Now go out there and start the speculations up again, I hear Brett Ratner is interested in getting dirty with some Jedi’s!
