2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine was a pleasant surprise. It was not only a very funny movie, but also a great throwback to 1980s comedies and a great commentary on how your bad decisions in your past influence your crappy future. The fact that it starred John Cusack — known for such 1980s teenage comedies as Better Off Dead… — made it even better. Of course, the ultimate reason why it was such a big surprise is that I don’t think anyone thought a movie titled Hot Tub Time Machine would have any chance of, well, being good.
Though Hot Tub Time Machine didn’t do huge business in theaters — it grossed $64 million worldwide on a $36 million budget — it has been a huge hit on DVD, probably because people who wouldn’t dream of buying a ticket to see a movie titled Hot Tub Time Machine were told by others that they had to see it despite the silly title.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM, which made the first film, is talking with stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke about the sequel, and the very funny Corddry could possible co-write the script with Steve Pink, who directed the original film and could also direct the sequel. The article notes that Cusack is not involved yet — however, Cusack is longtime friends with Pink and was responsible for getting him the directing gig on the original. Still, Cusack always has an incredibly busy schedule and has never done a sequel so his participation isn’t a lock by any means.
I’d love to see a sequel if the material is good, although I’d be a lot more interested if Cusack were involved. His character’s storyline really held the film together, and I’d be disappointed to see another time travel adventure with this crew without him.
