Everyone is hopping on board the Marvel train these days and the actors that are being cast for their films just seem to be getting bigger and bigger. First we saw Robert Redford sign on for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and now another Hollywood legend has signed on for a role in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, and that man is Michael Douglas.
In the film, Douglas will be playing Henry ‘Hank’ Pym, the first Ant-Man and the creator of the Ant-Man suit. This also confirms that Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, the new Ant-Man and the guy who steals Pym’s technology in order to become that hero. What makes this interesting is that it confirms there are two Ant-Men in the film who will likely join forces at some point to stop some sort of evil since it isn’t likely that Hank Pym creates Ultron in this specific Marvel Universe, Tony Stark is rumored to be the mastermind behind it (for Avengers 2). though I could be wrong and he could end up being a small villainous COG in the main villain’s plan.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige had this today about the casting decision:
With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.
This isn’t the only bit of Ant-Man news to surface over the past few days. Today The Wrap has claimed that Michael Pena is in talks and is interested in a role in Ant-Man, though Marvel has denied these talks are occurring. According to THR, “Marvel had been on the lookout for what insiders describe as a “tough Latino” who has to be ready for a lot of physical play.” This doesn’t tell us if he will be a good guy or bad guy but at least we know Pena can handle action, drama and comedy with relative ease. In my opinion he’s one of the most underrated actors working today and I’d love to see him team up with Wright for this film.
Ant-Man is set to his theaters July 31, 2015.
