It looks like The Weinsteins are once again pushing forward with the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the second film in Wang Du Lu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy. The film, which is now titled The Green Destiny, was penned by Forbidden Kingdom scribe John Fusco and will be directed by the man responsible for the epic fight scenes in the first film, Yuen Woo Ping.
Aside from the confirmation of Yuen Woo Ping as the director, the other great bit of news is that Michelle Yeoh will be returning to reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien while the master of period films Donnie Yen will be playing someone named Silent Wolf.
As for the story, John Fusco was previously quoted saying that “This [film] introduces a new generation of star-crossed lovers, and a new series of antagonists in a battle of good and evil. It has a Knights Errant quality. There is an alternate universe in the books, a martial forest that exists alongside the real world, full of wandering sword fighters, medicine men, defrocked priests, poets, sorcerers and Shaolin renegades.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the film turns out without Ang Lee at the helm but as long as the script is good I have faith that Yuen Woo Ping will do a decent job delivering the goods, though it’ll be very hard to top the original.
More information about the project is apparently going to be revealed at some point during Cannes.
