As if the guys over at Mondo weren’t busy enough with just wrapping up NYCC last weekend and now they have special events in LA at the New Beverly Theater not to mention all the events they have going on for the Alamo Draft Houses in Austin. Somehow these guys just felt that wasn’t enough so they decided to open their latest gallery show this weekend respectfully showcasing the Universal Monsters. Now this isn’t the first time Mondo has had a hand with Universal Monsters, previously they have released prints for Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man and Phantom of the Opera. The difference this time is that not only will there just be prints available for those films, some pretty amazing artist will have original pieces on display as well.
The Universal Monsters gallery show opens this Friday, October 19 and will feature a ton of new work from some of the hottest artist such as Martin Ansin, Kevin Tong, Ken Taylor, Francesco Francavilla Jason Edminson, Rich Kelly, Phantom City Creative, JC Richard and Ghostpatrol, to name a few. The real treat is that legends like Rick Baker and Drew Struzan will also have work to contribute to the show.
To give you a sneak peak as to what will be available during the show, we have some of the original pieces that will be on display and for sale by Struzan as well as a few of the prints that will be for sale. As more of the prints are released, we will update and add them to the collection below.
According to the LA Times HeroComplex, Struzan will have additional pieces of art as well as the four above. The other pieces are rumored to be for The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula . The scariest part is what some of these original pieces of art will probably go for during the gallery, early suggestions think around $5,000-$10,000+. If that is a little too rich for your blood, here is the information regarding the prints that will be available as of today again more will be released in the coming days.
- CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON / Ken Taylor / 24×36 /Print Run: 430 / $50
- THE MUMMY / Laurent Durieux / 24×36 / Print Run: 400 / $50
- THE INVISIBLE MAN / Francesco Francavilla / 24×36 / Print Run: 405 / $45
Update #1: A preview of some original art work from Mike Mitchell has just been release. Now who says monsters have to be scary and can’t be cute! It’s an interesting rendition of Dracula and The Creature to say the least (via Austin Chronical)
Update #2: The first original piece from Canadian artist Jason Edmiston has just been released. So far his rendition of The Bride of Frankenstein is pretty terrifying. I would not want to wake up to those eyes watching me! (via Wired)
Update #3: First the Bride, now Dracula! Jason Edmiston is killing it thus far.
The gallery will stay until November 10th and at which point will be gone forever! Well not forever, just on other peoples walls.
So what’s next for the Mondo team? Well you would think they would take a break, but that isn’t like them at all and in fact they have another gallery planned with some artist named Olly Moss over in England, seems like he is a big deal or something! That gallery is expected to open November 17th thru December 2nd. If you happen to be in England, I would highly recommend you check out the gallery which will be held at the White Cloth Gallery. The show is being kept pretty secretive, which is nothing new when it comes to Olly, but as soon as more information about the art and prints that will be available, we will let you know.
