Gareth Edwards, the director of the upcoming Godzilla film, made his big break with a little film called Monsters which did surprisingly well. Some were so impressed with it that a sequel was given the green light. Since then, all had been quiet on the production front, that is, until today. Monsters: Dark Continent began principal photography today in Jordan and will remain there for five weeks until it shoots for a week in Detroit.
In addition to the shooting launch, Johnny Harris (Welcome to the Punch), Sam Keeley (What Richard Did) and Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones) have been confirmed to star in the follow-up film. Monsters: Dark Continent takes place a few years after Edwards’ film where “Infected Zones have spread across the world. While US military try to wipe out the monsters, they soon realize they face resistance from a number of corners.”
“Producer Allan Niblo of Vertigo said: “Monsters: Dark Continent is a sci-fi action film that remains true to the artistry and intelligence of its prequel Monsters as well as providing the excitement, thrills and set pieces of a genre film.” I hope this is true because if this tries to stay as dramatic as the original we will be in for a pretty boring film, which isn’t what sequels are necessarily about (and I enjoyed the creativity of the original).
Monsters: Dark Continent is being directed by first time feature director Tom Green with a script penned by Jay Basu; Gareth Edwards is set to be an executive producer.
