I’m capping off a week of odd movie news reports by maybe the most odd announcement I’ve ever posted on Movie Buzzers: according to Variety, Warner Bros. has just greenlit a Lego feature film.
Yes, Lego, the ever-popular plastic building bricks, is heading to the big screen in 2014 for a live-action/animated action-adventure set in the Lego world. The Variety piece suggests that 80% of the film will be animated, suggesting that it probably involves some kids being sucked into Legoland and having to get back home — appropriately, that’s a very 1980s movie plot. The animation will be done by Animal Logic, the same group which made the original Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians with Warners.
This film will extend the Warner Bros./Lego relationship that has produced the successful Lego Batman video game (which is actually all kinds of awesome) and various Batman Lego playsets.
I could actually see this project making sense if it is a totally batshit crazy off-the-wall Lego extravaganza. Think casting Robin Williams as the head Lego man and let him go nuts. You can literally do anything with Lego, so if this movie isn’t a postmodern foray into the absurdities of the human mind, I don’t see it reaching its full potential.
