Written and directed by the screenwriting duo behind The Hangover, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are making their first foray into the director’s chair(s) with 21 and Over, a mindless and raunchy college comedy hell bent on pushing their dirty sense of humor to the max.
When old friends Casey (Skylar Astin) and Miller (Miles Teller) take a trip to surprise their high school best friend Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) on his 21st birthday, Jeff regretfully informs them that he can’t go out because of a big med school interview the next morning that his strict father will be accompanying him to. After Miller applies some pressure, the trio head out for “one beer,” but what starts out as an innocent time at a bar turns into rowdy Jeff taking full advantage of his newfound 21 year old privileges and a night of love and chaos for the other two. All Miller and Casey want to do is bring Jeff home but they don’t know his address and Jeff is too drunk to help, their quest leads them on a road to an Eyes Wide Shut sorority, a bonfire with an angry buffalo and a video game-like frat part.
Miller is the trash talking, loose lipped group slut who just wants everybody to have fun. Casey is the uptight, respectful Stanford student who already has his post college career lined up while Jeff seems to be a mixture of both, minus the whole honorable and stern stereotypical Asian father thing.
Justin Chon was the perfect guy to cast as the drunken focal point of the movie. I mean, let’s be serious, when it comes to the funniest brand of drunk people, very few things come close to a drunk Asian, they’re just always so funny but even more so when they’re black out belligerent. Miles and Skylar were adequate leads but I found Miles to be a bit over the top, part of it has to do with the dialogue as every other word out of his mouth is “fuck,” “pussy” or some other curse word, it felt like too much even for a young twenty something.
As mentioned earlier, this was written by the guys who wrote the original Hangover film, with that in mind you should immediately expect the envelope to be pushed. That means, except a lot of naked men running around and causing problems, expect there to be cops, drugs, hot woman, and a variety of ridiculous scenarios that include a teddy bear being glued to Jeff’s crotch (see poster above), a posse of cheerleaders looking to kick the trio’s asses, and an old guy trippin’ on acid.
21 and Over is a perfect movie for those who don’t mind immature, mindless humor. It’s a film that tries way too hard at times but during others it’ll offer some great shock laughs as well some genuine belly laughter at the expense of all the men in the movie. So if you’re between the ages of 16 and 27 and enjoyed films like The Hangover, Sex Drive, MILF, Grandma’s Boy or Americnan Pie, than 21 and Over is a fun way to relax and kill time. If not, then I highly suggest avoiding it as we don’t want your virgin minds to be sodomized by the filth that unfolds within its 90 minute duration.
Rating: Overzealous at times but who can pass up on watching a drunk Asian cause chaos (5.9/10)
