I don’t know about you, but I wanted aliens. The trailer for Battle: Los Angeles shows aliens invading Los Angeles. Ok, yes please, I want more. What I got was a war movie. Do I even need to explain? Soldiers trying to save civilians. Booooooring. That’s not what I signed up for.
Ok, so let’s say that I wanted a war movie. Ok, it had explosions. It definitely had intensity, but I didn’t care about the characters AT ALL. It tried. It tried really hard. It had the typical beginning where you “get to know” the characters but that was so obvious that it completely turned me off.
Director Jonathan Liebesman did manage to keep the pace going minus the TERRIBLE dialogue. Wow. I didn’t see Skyline, but at least this had Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Michelle Rodriguez (Predators). Both could have been much better but you could tell they were imprisoned by the dialogue they were given.
I like cheesy movies. But there is a difference when the movie is not setting out to be cheesy. This presented itself as a serious alien movie. FAIL. This might do ok the first weekend, but it will bomb once word-of-mouth spreads.
Rating: When the entire audience erupts in laughter during a key emotional scene, that says it all. 1/10
Opens in wide release on Friday, March 11, 2011.
