Buried is the low-budget thriller of the year! Yes, that is a bold statement and I stand by it for a variety of reasons. One, the script, written by Chris Sparling, is seemingly simple yet is has some sophisticated undertones that make this “movie in a wooden box” unique in every way. Two, the entire film is shot in that wooden coffin. How many good films do you know of that take place in a tiny space with only one actor? None. Exactly! Three, this is the film that will catapult Ryan Reynolds from acting mediocrity to one of purpose and dramatic range. Not only is he funny but he can now handle the roles where emotion is actually an important part of the feature.
No, this isn’t Phone booth underground, it is an entirely different concept; one that makes you think, causes anxiety, and makes you panic as you begin to feel what Paul Conroy (Reynolds) is feeling up until the last second of the film. You will feel a lot of trepidation throughout the duration of the film and by the end you’ll be gasping for air, begging to get out of that claustrophobic coffin. Now that you have an idea that Buried is pure cinematic magic, you can check out my review for it after the jump. Buried is directed by Rodrigo Cortes and will have a limited release on September 24 and a national release on October 8th.
