They did it! They combined two of my favorite genres and made an awesome summer blockbuster! Fans of director Jon Favreau know him from making the Marvel favorite, Iron Man, and will not be disappointed this time around either.
In Cowboys & Aliens, in the wild west a disoriented cowboy with a metal bracelet on his arm comes to town to find answers. Soon he’s using the bracelet as a weapon against giant metal flying machines. More greatness follows.
What I liked the most was the diversity of the supporting cast. These are not the typical actors you would see in a western and it’s such a delight for me. SPOILERS for those not wanting to know the cast. My #1 favorite: Paul Dano, in a small role, but one where he was truly wonderful. #2: Keith Carradine (love him as Lundy in Showtime’s Dexter). I was also pleasantly surprised to see Clancy Brown (head guard from Shawshank Redemption) and Walton Goggins (Predators, FX’s Justified).
Of course the main cast is all-star with Daniel Craig (the new Bond) and Harrison Ford (uh, duh, if you don’t know who he is, well….). I didn’t think I was a Daniel Craig fan, but I was impressed. I wasn’t totally sold on Harrison Ford, but he was ok. His dialogue delivery slipped here and there. Sam Rockwell was the most enjoyable at the beginning of the film, but didn’t get as much screen time as the film progressed.
As far as the story, I’ll admit, when I saw how many screenwriters contributed, I was a little worried. However, it was very solid and didn’t go into too much detail to bury itself. The story kept moving and even though it followed some of the typical ups and downs, you really weren’t sure what was going to happen next.
This is going to do very well and will entertain the masses greatly in the crazy summer heat. I am saving it a place on my Blu-ray shelf.
Rating: Action-packed, entertaining and fun. 8/10
