Oh, c’mon. It’s Nicolas Cage! He has become a parody of himself. Love him or hate him, he’s out there doing it over and over again. And, as someone pointed out to me, he’s not one to sit on the sidelines, he’s almost always the lead. His newest flick, Drive Angry 3D, has a story almost as ridiculous as it’s title, but hey, it’s unique. Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes from hell and is out to avenge the death of his daughter and rescue his new granddaughter. Along the way, he enables the help of a hot, young girl, Piper (Amber Heard). You may remember her as the girlfriend from Pineapple Express. Or maybe not. Anyway, she’s the main eye candy of the movie and is (thank goodness) not the love interest in Nicolas Cage.
From the very first frame, you know this is going to be non-stop action craziness. You’re either along for the ride, or you’re going to hate it. Guess which one I am? Yep, I was totally along for the ride. Did you enjoy Shoot’em Up? Then this is right up your alley. It has all the gratuitous killing and sex and explosions you can ever want.
One thing that did kinda bother me was that although Nicolas Cage was good, he wasn’t “crazy.” I was kinda expecting more over-the-top. I was hoping for it actually. Instead he delivered his lines and kinda walked through it. What saved the movie (if you can call it saving) was the wild dialogue and crazy action sequences.
William Finchtner (he’s a “that guy” and I always seem to remember him as Grace’s boyfriend in Grace Under Fire) is The Accountant. He’s sent to bring Milton back to Hell, and to look cool in every scene. He seemed to have a lot of fun with this role and more power to him. He’s a working actor and does well in anything I’ve seen him in. I did wonder what in the world David Morse was doing in this movie. Hey, I just realized they were both in Contact. Huh.
Director Patrick Lussier shot this in 3D and I have to say, it was definitely better than I expected. I like stuff flying out at the screen, that’s the whole POINT of 3D for goodness sake. He also co-wrote the script and I’m sure that they had a lot of fun writing then executing the scenes. It’s short, keeps moving and only drags toward the end when it gets a little too sentimental.
Rating: It’s exactly what you think it is. 7/10
