One of the first movies in which I can actually remember going to the theater and seeing as a kid was Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. It was an epic experience fueled by one of my favorite things in life at the time, dinosaurs. After years of wishing I could see the film on the big screen again, Universal decided to have the film converted to 3D for a re-release of the timeless classic and boy did it bring a sense of wonder back to my life, making me feel like a kid all over again.
I’m going to keep this review very simple because Jurassic Park shouldn’t need an explanation in this day in age, everyone has seen it though, if you were born after 1991 you probably haven’t seen it in a theater. If you’ve never seen Jurassic Park well, I just feel sad for you. If you don’t know what it’s about I’m not going to tell you, ask your parents. If don’t have parents, ask your siblings. If you don’t have siblings, ask your friends. If you don’t have friends, check the internet. If you don’t have the internet, ask a stranger. If you live under a rock in an isolated area well then, my friend, you are shit out of luck.
What was fun about seeing this film with a group of people that have already seen it was that everyone still laughed on cue at all the jokes and quips. As a collective, we all laughed and enjoyed the technological differences that existed then and today, namely at the expense of Lex Murphy (the teenage girl) who couldn’t believe a CD touch screen program was in a car. It was also amazing to see how good the effects work was on this film, you could barely tell it was from 20 years ago. This added another level of enjoyment to a film that’s already highly entertaining.
Watching the movie again was also an eye opening experience because there were so many things that I picked up and now understand as an adult that I didn’t notice or understand as a child. For example, I had no idea that Wayne Knight’s character in the film was trying to sell the dinosaur embryos, I thought he just wanted to steal them. The scene near the beginning never registered with me until now and it changes my whole understanding of the movie and how everything went to hell.
Now we get to the reason why this is in theaters, the 3D conversion. To me, the 3D did absolutely nothing for the film. In most spots I couldn’t even tell it was in 3D but when it worked it provided some beautiful depth to the old film and made me even jump at a Velociraptor part that I normally wouldn’t have jumped at. In those moments I give the 3D kudos but I would love to watch the film in a theater again without it, the film doesn’t need it for the audience to enjoy the movie again.
Jurassic Park 3D is an exciting film to watch on the big screen and that’s exactly why everyone who loves film and loves this movie in particular should venture out of the woodwork to see this bad boy with a crowd. There is such a feeling of nostalgia when you watch it and when you are in a crowd with people who have seen it mixed with those who are about to watch it for the first time on a big screen, the feeling is simply incredible. Though I could care less about the 3D, this is a chance to watch a timeless classic in all of its glory where it deserves to be seen, on a giant screen with a kick ass speaker system so be sure to go check it out once, twice or as many times as you want before you have to watch it on a regular TV again.
Rating: An inspiring and fantastic film that’s required viewing for people that love dinosaurs or love movies…there’s no excuse to not seeing it (8.5/10)
PS For those with young kids, this is your opportunity to be a cool parent and open their eyes to the awesomeness of Spielberg’s earlier work.
