Yeah, so I’m a Bradley Cooper fan. That alone gave Limitless a head start. Eddie Morra is a down-on-his-luck writer when he runs into his ex-wife’s brother and is given a new “wonder drug” that highly increases his motivation. The story is quite intriguing and, who knows, it could very well be possible in the next ten years. However, the tagline is: “What if a drug could make you rich and powerful?” This is actually misleading. I like how Bradley Cooper states it, “What would you do if you became the best version of yourself?” That is a much better tagline.
Bradley Cooper (he’s got a great name, doesn’t he?) was perfectly cast for this role because not only could he pull off being the charming, handsome and clever, Eddie, he also embodies the downtrodden, unmotivated Eddie. Add to his acting the visual effects that were a perfect mixture of reality and the surreal. Director Neil Burger is able to capture Eddie’s state of mind with the color, tone and overall perspective of the camera. When not on the drug, the lighting and tone is dull and dreary, then once he’s feels the drug taking effect, the colors get brighter as do his blue eyes. It really puts you in the moment and enhances every scene. The music is also very subtle, but is a suited accompaniment in the drama scenes as well as action.
I really liked the pace of the film and although there were some turns, there were never really any twists. Like the character, you could pretty much see a few steps ahead of every situation. I would have liked the story to go a bit deeper and darker. It shows hints of the darkness, but overall it becomes a film that you don’t think about too much, you’re just along for the ride. I enjoyed the film thoroughly, but I wanted to be thinking of it after. It’s such an interesting possibility in this age of a drug-for-everything. This could have been much more thought provoking and conversational, instead, it’s a good story filled with action-packed eye candy. If it had gone more sci-fi, I think this would have been possible, but then you would have probably lost some of the audience. They went with a safe bet, which honestly, turned out to be very entertaining – so it’s not all bad.
Rating: Good action but a story that is limited. 7/10
