Based on the series of legal thrillers from bestselling author Michael Connelly and directed by Brad Furman, The Lincoln Lawyer is your typical courtroom drama, filled with a few twists and turns that most audience members will be able to figure out before the end of the film.
Matthew McConaughey plays L.A defense attorney, Mick Haller, whose office is the back of his chauffeured Lincoln convertible (Wonder where they got the title). Haller is a smooth talking, suave lawyer, who now makes a living defending petty thieves and small time criminals so he can provide for his daughter and also his ex, played by Marisa Tomei.
Haller received a tip from a bail bondsman (John Leguizamo), about a rich Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), who’s been accused of the rape and attempted murder of a prostitute. Haller at first sees the case as pretty much open and close with a huge payday, but as time rolls on and more clues and evidence are discovered, Haller has a change of opinion of his latest client’s innocence.
Overall the film wasn’t all that bad. McConaughey plays a very convincing lawyer (Side note: Originally Matthew planed on going to Law School at UT before films) and Phillippe’s role as the hot shot, spoiled rich kid is pretty entertaining. The concept is original and the supporting cast is outstanding and really gives the film an interesting dynamic.
I will say, I was excited to see Matthew reprise his role as a lawyer because I thought he did an amazing job in “A Time to Kill”, however I left the film feeling a little bit cheated. The twists that are presented in the film are very predictable and were poorly envisioned by director Brad Furman.
The film sits right under the two hour mark, which is tolerable, and for the most part if you love legal based dramas, McConaughey shirtless or just want to see him in something other then a romantic comedy, than this film is right up your alley.
