I love movies that surprise me and the first film by Nick Tomnay, The Perfect Host, is no exception. He wrote, directed and edited this winding tale of a dinner party gone wrong, terribly wrong. Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Pierce), is setting up for a dinner party when a fleeing robber, John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) knocks on his door looking for a place to hide. John thinks he’s in control but the tides soon turn in this dark, creepy, and hilarious adventure.
The lighting and cinematography reminds me of a 1970s TV Show. It’s dark and a little muddled, but it sets a tone for a story that is a little sketchy and unexpected. Although most of the film takes place inside a home, it always seems fresh because of the arrangement of the rooms and the layout of the shots.
David Hyde Pierce is spectacular and hilarious as the dinner host. He is able to give his character every emotion with ease and charm. It’s fantastic to see him in such a complicated role that really shows off his acting chops while also highlighting his range. Clayne Crawford using his Alabama accent, is likeable and sympathetic as a robber/con man.
It’s got a little bit of everything: comedy, horror, drama, and ummm musical numbers? Anyway, you’ll be just as confused as John is as the wine flows and the stakes are raised.
There are lots of little holes in this story, but I’m inclined to overlook them and just go with it. If you overlook them too, I’m sure you’ll be just as dazzled and delighted by every new twist.
Rating: Totally unexpected and fun. 7/10
