I am a True Blood fan. Yes, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit it but I only mention one of my guilty pleasures to make the following point; sometimes after an episode I wonder quietly to myself if I had accidentally turned on the wrong channel and watched an hour of vampire fetish soft core porn. Shortly after that I tend to question some other life decisions on how I spend my time but that’s not the point here. The point is that after watching The Victim I wasn’t sure if it was a movie with a plot that was lacking so they filled it with various extended sex scenes or if the director was a soft core porn director that was going for best storyline in a porno award. Having said that, had there been a few tweaks here and there I think this movie could have been one of the better ones I had seen in a while.
Essentially Harrison (Ryan Honey) and Cooger (Denny Kirkwood) are slightly dirty cops that like to use the drugs they confiscate to pay Mary (Danielle Harris) and Annie (Jennifer Blanc) for sexual favors. They are both strippers so although a stereotype of strippers (hey some of them are just doing it pay for college) it fits the plot well. On one of these “here’s some coke….and my cock” adventures in the woods, Harrison finds out that Mary has the weakest neck in human history and breaks it, accidentally killing her. Cooger and Harrison attempt to cover up the death while Annie sits about 15 yards away. Annie discovers what they are trying to do and runs away while she gets chased by Harrison and Cooger. Annie randomly stumbles into Kyle’s (Michael Biehn) cabin. The rest of the movie revolves around the Harrison and Cooger attempting to locate Annie, while Annie attempts to prove to Kyle she’s not crazy and that they really killed her bestest friend forever.
SPOILER ALERT:
Toward the end we find out that there have been lots of girls that have gone missing and Kyle muses that it’s likely the work of a serial killer. But he gets into the mindset of a serial killer a little too easily if you ask me dun dun dun.
This to me is the aspect that could have truly made this movie great for what it is. I suppose it’s technically a twist but it’s not in the aspect that there was no foreshadowing at all besides that he was a loner that lived out in the woods by himself. But that doesn’t exactly scream possible serial killer. If there had been hints along the way and it didn’t seem like an afterthought this movie would be something I’d recommend picking up ASAP, but due to that missing it’s only something I recommend you watch if you’ve seen all the other major Hollywood movies that have come out. Plus if this aspect of the plot was focused on even slightly there wouldn’t be as much of a need for the extended sex scenes.
Rating: Check it out if you’ve hit rock bottom movie wise (4/10)
