As excited as I was to see this, I was holding back a little because I didn’t want my beloved memories shattered. I am happy to report that I was delighted by this latest adventure. As Winnie the Pooh and friends look for a replacement for Eeyore’s tail they happen upon a note from Christopher Robin. They misinterpret the note and embark on an journey leading them around the Hundred Acre Wood.
John Cleese narrates and we get great banter between him and Pooh as John guides Pooh in the story. It’s amazing how they were still able to capture all the characters perfectly and yet bring a brand-new story to life. There are a few songs, but nothing that isn’t instantly charming and memorable. (I caught myself singing one of them today actually.)
The animation is something that I personally was in awe by. I grew up watching the The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh 1977 VHS tape fuzzy and grainy, so it was amazing to see those characters in stunning digital form. Everything was clear and crisp and…ok, I’m gushing. I can’t help it. I’m a HD junkie. I’ll just say it does it justice.
The only thing I was taken aback by was some of the character voices. Now I understand that you can’t get the same voices from 30 years ago, but I was a little thrown off by Rabbit and Owl. This really isn’t a big deal at all, I’m just pointing out that I noticed it. Jim Cummings as Pooh and Tigger was FANTASTIC.
It’s only 70 minutes, and the story keeps moving at such a pace that you always want more and yet are completely satisfied at the same time. I highly recommend to any fan of the original or to anyone with children.
Rating: If you have any love for the original, you will not be disappointed. 9/10
