Movie versions of Missile Command and Asteroids are in the works, so this news story shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Space Invaders, the 1978 ultra-classic arcade game, will be made into a film by producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker. The awesomely fun shooter — which involves you shooting rows of aliens who are trying to take over the earth. As one of the most popular arcade games of all time, it’s not difficult to still find a dusty machine sitting in the corner of your local arcade.
di Bonaventura is also producing the Asteroids movie, and produced the Transformers films, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, and Doom, so he must know a thing or two about turning toys and video games into potential blockbusters. Then again, it shouldn’t be too hard to make a movie about aliens invading Earth — they come out about every six months.
