Oh yes, it’s almost that time of year again. The one week a year that every comic, movie and TV fanboy has dreamt about since last July, the 2012 San Diego Comic Con. With the largest Con only a few weeks away, I think now would be a good time to discuss what movies COULD potentially be attending this year with possibly a presentation in the infamous Hall H. Again, none of these have been confirmed, but are more my predictions for SDCC this year.
These first 10 films are the ones that I would say have an 85% chance or better at having a panel in Hall H this year.
1) The Hobbit
This one has to be a no brainer since there has been speculation about this film making a splash since it was announced last year. We have seen numerous behind the scene videos and also a trailer for the film, so it only makes since that it would have a huge panel at this year’s con. What better place could you think of to debut an exclusive look then at SDCC!?!?! Peter Jackson has been a huge hit at prior SDCC so add one more to his belt and throw some 3D into this panel, Hall H will be packed!
2) Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2
As much as I dislike this franchise, I will say they have a very loyal following and if they make this one the first panel in Hall H on Thursday like they did last year, we can expect to see the Twihearts camping out again. Luckily, this is the last film and then we will never have to worry about it taking up a spot in Hall H ever again. Expect the entire cast to be there for a very emotional panel and audience. So long Twilight!
3) Total Recall
I’m a bit skeptical about this one and don’t really know why it would be back this year since it had a panel last year, but I have a feeling it will be. With the film set to open August 3rd, I would imagine this would be a huge push to try and convince people the film might actually be decent. On the other hand, this could be a desperate attempt to remind people it’s coming out. While the panel last year was fun and entertaining, I really wish it would skip SDCC this year, but I know they won’t.
4) Expendables 2
In 2010 when The Expendables and the entire cast was in attendance, people said it was one of the best panels that year in Hall H. I can only imagine they would do it again for the sequel, not to mention CHUCK NORRIS. I can already see the line of people waiting to get to the mic in Hall H and tell a Chuck Norris joke. I’m looking forward to this panel if in fact they do attend, which my suspicion is they will.
5) Resident Evil: Retribution
Again another no brainer here. While there are pros and cons about this franchise, I will say they have gradually been getting better and, in the past, they always seem to make it to San Diego. With the film set for theaters September 14th expect this one to be a 3D panel as well and hopefully they can convince us that this is the best one in the series.
6) Looper
One of my most anticipated films of 2012, this will be one hell of a panel. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis (who could potentially be in San Diego for three films), expect this to be one hell of a panel and hopefully a full trailer. I will say this should be in everyone’s top 10 panels to attend at this years con, not to mention the film hits theaters September 28th.
7) Pacific Rim
My favorite and most enjoyable person to sit and listen to last year at SDCC had to be Guillermo del Toro and I can’t wait to see him there again this year to promote Pacific Rim. While there really hasn’t been much news on the film or on the current state of production, I would imagine he has something amazing in store this year for us, since he hinted at it last year during SDCC. While the film doesn’t come out until July 2013, I would imagine he has some footage for us now, although I doubt we will see his “Monsters”.
8 ) Star Trek 2
Do I really need to say anything about this one? Star Trek and Comic-Con go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. J.J. Abrams is a huge fan of the con and I think many con goers would be disappointed if the film didn’t make an appearance. While most of the film has still been kept under wraps, Abrams and crew have begun editing the film and should have more then enough to put a bad ass trailer together.
9) Man of Steel
This one could go either way, although I am putting all my eggs in the basket with this one. Last year, Henry Cavill refused to talked about Man of Steel during his Immortals panel and they even made an announcement that they would not be taking any questions regarding it. For a Superhero film that has been highly talked about and has an amazing cast, there really hasn’t been much news to report for it. We have seen a few spy photos but other than that, nothing. I think Zack Snyder has been waiting for this since last year and will really give us something to talk about this time around. Please don’t let me down Zack!
10) Iron Man 3
Some may be thinking, there is no way this will be there, but you would be shocked. In the past, production for the other two Iron Man films didn’t begin until June and somehow managed to have enough footage for a trailer during SDCC. This time, production has been underway for a month already which means. . . . . We will probably have an Iron Man 3 panel this year and Marvel will be leading the way with their absence last year with The Avengers. There is no D23 this year so why not. RDJ loves SDCC and SDCC loves RDJ. I’m 99.9% confident that Iron Man 3 will be in Hall H this year, and if it isn’t, we shall burn Hall H down!!!!
These next 10 are fairly likely of having a presence in Hall H, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t.
11) Elysium
We don’t know the plot, nor anything about the film, however we do know that this is Neil Blomkamp‘s follow up film since District 9 and that Matt Damon is staring in it. Again we know nothing about this film so what better way to fill Hall H then to have a panel to disclose what exactly it is. Then again this could be exactly what Blomkamp has been waiting for or not.Guess we will have to wait and see.
12) Oblivion
Universal is no fool and they have been doing a great job with keeping information and photos of their upcoming Sci-Fi film Oblivion under wraps. With Tom Cruise as the leading star, I can’t imagine a better place then SDCC for Universal to reveal to the world the potential of this film. Not to mention, director Joseph Kosinski had a pretty good time with Tron Legacy back in 2010 at SDCC.
13) Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
I’m not really sure how this one would fit in, but for some reason I feel like Paramount might try and make a push with the film during SDCC. They already screwed up by pushing the film back to January 2013 from this summer and I get the feeling, people have forgotten about the film because of that. Hopefully they can pull something together with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton but I think Paramount might be missing their opportunity to spark some life back into the film if they skip out on Hall H this year.
14) Bourne Legacy / Skyfall
This one is a toss up between two films, I don’t really know the history with either regarding SDCC but I feel like with both films coming out in 2012, one or the other would make a splash in Hall H. Everyone loves James Bond and the Bourne series has a very strong following as well. While I would love to see both in attendance, I wouldn’t be that surpassed if neither where at the con either. However, like I said both films come out this year so why not try and promote it at SDCC.
15) Dredd
What do we know about Dredd. Not a whole lot actually, which would be a great time for Lionsgate to start promoting the crap out of their Judge Dredd reboot. There has been a lot of discussion about the look and feel of the film, however we haven’t seen any footage. Lionsgate would be a fool to not bring their comic-book adaptation to Comic Con. Lets just hope if they do show up, the footage will bring new hope to the film.
16) Frankenweenie
I have mentioned my opinion on Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie before and it hasn’t changed. I feel this is just another failed Burton film and has nothing for viewers to look forward to. However if you are a die hard Burton fan, expect to see him in Hall H with some clips from the film and who knows with who or what else he will bring with him. There are usually a couple animated films in Hall H and I see Frankenweenie being one of them.
17) Cloud Atlas
Ah yes, the Wachowski‘s are at it again with their latest Sci-fi thriller. It has been awhile since they’ve been in attendance at SDCC and what better time then with Cloud Atlas. Based off the novel by David Mitchell, the film has potential with stars like Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving and Halle Berry. They really need to get the ball rolling on promoting the film because its set for release this December.
18) G.I Joe: Retaliation This film has a lot of explaining to do with the recent delay until March 2013. there have been reports that it is due to the studio wanting to do 3D conversion on the film, while others are saying that it has to do with Channing Tatum‘s recent increase in popularity. Regardless, they have a lot of persuading to do with this film to try and bring the excitement back. I would expect them to do heavy promoting throughout the convention as well. Hasbro better have some sweet swag to give away as well for it.
One of the only reason why this film would be at SDCC would be because of Quentin Tarantino. Other than that, I don’t really see this film fitting in. However, everyone loves QT and he has been pretty good to SDCC thus far when he has held a panel. While I think this one might miss the cut this year, it wouldn’t be terrible if it did make it. I am very interested in this film and curious to see the direction Tarantino is going with it.
20) World War Z
This is probably the longest shot on this list, however it wouldn’t surpass me at all if we got to see some footage of the film and get a good feel as to what to expect for the tone and pace. I know WWZ has been in production for quite some time now so there should be plenty of footage to put together a trailer or hell, even a teaser for the film. Fingers crossed on this one!
While these are just a few of the films that could possibly be at SDCC this year, one never really knows what to expect until the programming guide is released in mid to late June. I will still go on record with saying that I still believe there is going to be something special done for The Dark Knight Rises at SDCC this. The film opens the following week and it would be a nice treat for the fans to get to experience something special for Christopher Nolan‘s final Batman film.
Stay tuned throughout this month for more SDCC coverage and then be sure to check in daily in July when we will be down in beautiful San Diego bringing you all the latest news and reviews during SDCC’12.
