One of my favorite films of 2011 was André Øvredal’s Trollhunter Trollhunter, an awesome docu-style film about a group of students investigating bear attacks which they find out are actually troll attacks. Over the course of the film, they document a grizzly man known as the troll hunter who explains that these troll attacks are being covered up by the government and they hire men like him to keep them in check.
The same year that Trollhunter came out in the states it was announced that there would be an English language remake and today there seems to be some new momentum on that front. According to Deadline, Game of Thrones and Centurion director Neil Marshall has been set to direct the Troll Hunter remake and is aiming to shoot in early 2014. The script was penned by Marc Haimes but Marshall will go through it and make any necessary changes before filming commences. As for actors, they are looking to get a top name actor to star but one that doesn’t usually dabble in the genre pool which should be interesting.
Neil Marshall is definitely an excellent choice to direct this $25 million picture but I’m just worried that the impact of the feature won’t be nearly as powerful as the original, plus, he isn’t exactly known for his comedic relief, something which Trollhunter had an appropriate amount of. My issue with this English language remake is that that troll mythology is very Scandinavian and that’s the reason why the original film worked so well in its original language, Norwegian, as well as its native country where people are already familiar with troll mythology. I think we are going to lose some of the charm and good storytelling since the English language audiences are going to have to be educated throughout the film, something which the original did but only to a certain extent.
