A while ago Movie Buzzers posted details about a possible Sex & the City prequel film in the works, developing Candace Bushnell’s The Carrie Diaries and Summer in the City. However, news has emerged regarding the young actresses who would possibly play the twenty-something versions of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda in the new film(s). We originally reported that Blake Lively (Green Lantern) was in talks to fill the Manolo Blahniks of Sarah Jessica Parker’s beloved Carrie Bradshaw.
However, according to Daily Mail, Lively is now being eyed to play Samantha Jones, made famous by Kim Cattrall. Newcomer, Elizabeth Olsen (yes, sister to twins Mary Kate & Ashley & star of Martha Marcy May Marlene) is a Carrie hopeful. In addition, Selena Gomez (Monte Carlo) is a potential Charlotte York, originally played by the uber-adorable Kristin Davis. Last, but not least, (who I think would be a great fit) is Emma Roberts (Scream 4) could reprise Cynthia Nixon’s portrayal of Miranda Hobbes.
SATC creator, Bushnell, recently told W magazine, “Every character has a back-story – what the reader sees, in a sense, is the tip of the iceberg. The characters don’t exist in a vacuum – when we first meet them… in their Thirties and single in New York – they are, in a sense, in the middle of their stories. Which is what makes the Carrie Diaries series so satisfying. We see different sides of the characters, which make them much more complex and interesting.“
I know I cringed at first upon hearing of an in-the-works prequel, especially after disappointing numbers at the box office for the Sex & the City 2 (a film that really pays homage to its fanbase, more than trying to make a motion picture). What do you think about this possible casting list? Check back with Movie Buzzers for more details on the development of this project!
