I’ll admit it, for the past year I’ve had a crazy desire to see dance film. Yes, I know, as man that generally avoids the genre as well as musicals it probably comes as a surprise. But when you read the synopsis for James Griffiths‘ comedy Cuban Fury and then find out that it stars Nick Frost, Chris O’Dowd, Rashida Jones, Olivia Colman and Ian McShane it’s hard to say no to it, especially when you know you’re going to get a good laugh or two (and the fact that I do enjoy salsa dancing when the opportunity arises…the ladies love it).
In Cuban Fury, Nick Frost plays Bruce Garrett, a former salsa childhood king turned overweight nice guy. When he discovers that his attractive new boss is a salsa dancer, Bruce becomes determined to win her over by taking a second crack at salsa dancing before his prick of a coworker (Chris O’Dowd) steals her away.
Before you decide to watch the trailer hear me out. I’ve actually seen the film and enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s a fun comedy that has some hilarious dialogue, excellent dancing and terrific chemistry amongst the actors. We also get to enjoy Nick Frost in a leading role, something we don’t see often and it pays off. The problem with the trailer is that while it gives you a nice overall feel for what to expect from the film, it shows off a lot of the great punch lines and physical bits of comedy that work best when surprised and seen in the context of the film.
Feel free to check the trailer out below since I’m sure by the time it comes out you’ll have forgotten the jokes, but if you don’t think you will skip it and trust me when I saw that it’s a light-hearted and enjoyable comedy.
Cuban Fury is set to release in the UK on Valentine’s Day, no US date has been set yet.
