Let’s be honest: even M. Night Shyamalan would admit that his best films were the two he made with Bruce Willis over a decade ago, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable (with the latter growing in popularity immensely since its release). His last four films were both critical and commercial failures (although most of them performed much better overseas), and he was desperately in need of a hit two movies ago. Meanwhile, although Willis has a number of action films coming out soon he has professed that he’s bored with action films, perhaps because the U.S. box office of A Good Day to Die Hard and Red 2 were disappointing. So it seems like a good idea for both of their careers if the two reunited for another project.
News out of the Berlin Film Festival (via Deadline) is that the duo are in talks to make Labor of Love, a script that Shyamalan sold to Fox in 1993 that has yet to be produced. According to the article:
Willis will play a Philadelphia book store owner who loses the love of his life in a tragic accident. Never big on words, he becomes haunted by the notion that he never properly told his wife how much he loved her. Since she once asked if he would walk across the country for her, he decides to show her posthumously just how much he did love her. That trek starts from Philadelphia to Pacifica, CA, which was her favorite place.
That doesn’t fit the scheme of Shyamalan’s usual “twist” endings (unless, of course, THE WIFE WAS STILL ALIVE THE WHOLE TIME!), but he has been making an effort to drift away from those type of narratives.
Frankly, I’d be more excited about the pair teaming up for the long-discussed Unbreakable 2, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments
