Yesterday, Legendary Comics held their panel for their upcoming graphic novels which was moderated by Chris Hardwick. The panel featured Legendary Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Scheck, The Tower Chronicle’s writer Matt Wagner, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, Annihilator writer Grant Morrison and Pacific Rim graphic novel author and screenwriter Travis Beacham.
The panel started with Bob Scheck discussing the brand, making a few jokes and then introducing Matt Wagner. The two discussed The Tower Chronicles and unveiled the cover art for the third part in the series. After, Grant Morrison came out and they unveiled his new project along with the logo for Annihilator.
After hearing a little about Annihilator, the hilarious big man himself, Guillermo del Toro, stepped onto the stage along with Travis Beacham and his awesome hat to discuss the film and graphic novel prequel. But before they dove into anything they showed us the trailer, or at least what seemed like a trailer and it was the same one they showed at SDCC earlier this year…and it blew my mind!
The trailer for Pacific Rim will be released in December so at least you can rest knowing when its coming. Now, I thought I knew what excitement was but after seeing this trailer played in front of a crowd of Guillermo fan boys/girls and seeing giant robots fighting giant monsters, I now know the true meaning of excitement, for I now can’t fucking wait for this movie to come out next year.
I had an opportunity to ask the panel a question and so I asked about the franchising of the property and if the graphic novel would lead to a prequel film or, since it seemed like they had enough material, would it lead to sequels. The answer was an unofficial yes (pending the success of the film)
What might be the coolest thing while discussing the graphic novel and its connection to the film was hearing about the mythology and how much information they put together for the creation of the Pacific Rim world. Below are just two pages of Guillermo’s notes and man is he detailed.
You can listen to the entire panel here (excluding the part with the trailer here). It’s a pretty entertaining panel and if you’ve never heard Guillermo speak then you should click play immediately.
