The 2012 New York Comic Con is finally upon us and this year it is completely sold out. Going on my third year in attendance all I can say is that I love NYCC for the fact that it’s smaller, much easier to manage and still driven by comics (even though I’m there for the movie stuff). The Con is rapidly growing in popularity despite a lackluster presence from Marvel (no Iron Man 3 content at all!) but all in all it should be a fun one as long as you take advantage of what it has to offer. Chris and I will be covering the con in depth on Saturday so be sure to check back to see what’s going on and/or what you missed.
From a guy who doesn’t know much about actual comics, I’m going to give a breakdown of what I do know: games, art and movies.
If you’re feeling some pop-culture or movie oriented art, obviously consider taking a look at Mondo’s booth. They haven’t sold out of their pieces yet which is both refreshing and surprising. I’m not a big fan of most of the posters they released at this Con but The Iron Giant and Shaun of the Dead posters are pretty awesome. If you’re feeling something different then check out Acidfree Gallery’s booth where they have three Tom Whalen Transformers posters and two G.I. Joe posters from Dave Perillo. Below is the awesome variant poster that’s been a hot commodity since day one. I personally passed but may end up buying it tomorrow if any are still left.
If you’re looking for video games be sure to check out the Halo 4 booth to get in some big team battle action (I may actually buy this one), Assassins Creed III, Gears of War, God of War, and there’s a Marvel Kinect game that’s coming out which seems pretty sweet so check that out too.
If you stop by Legendary’s booth they have the human body suits from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming robots vs. monsters film, Pacific Rim. Matt Wagner, the writer of The Tower Chronicles, will be signing all weekend but if you were there yesterday you may have picked up an exclusive Pacific Rim poster and got it signed by Guillermo himself.
I always recommend the Magnolia Pictures/Magnet Releasing booth just because it has awesome movies but this year it also has an ABC’s of Death cutout where you can take a picture with your head replacing Death’s head. They are also giving-away a Mondo 13 Assassins Takashi Miike poster so if you’re into that you should enter the drawing.
Here is the banner for the upcoming Carrie remake. It’s very similar to the one that was at San Diego but there is one small difference.
Here are a few costumes I encountered throughout the day and I’ve seen plenty more awesome ones since then.
Lastly, and this is my favorite part about NYCC, on preview night they always have some sort of concert and this year Ben Folds Five performed. They were great and I’m curious to see who the Con gets to play next year.
If you’re heading to the con today (Saturday) tweet us @moviebuzzers @ruggermandigi or @ChrisMcKit if you want to meet up.
