In what was a quick and straightforward panel, director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) along with stars Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston fielded questions from moderator Chris Hardwick as well members of the audience about their latest horror film, The Conjuring.
During the panel, audiences were treated with the trailer for the upcoming old-school style ghost film and oh did it make the crowd gasp and shout in horror and excitement. In addition to being the first audience to ever see the trailer, James also presented a rather long clip from the film to give us an idea of what kind of tone we can expect along with the kind of scares we might be in for from this period horror. The clip was haunting and the crowd completely bought into it, I know I jumped a few times and think this is going to be Wan’s scariest film yet.
What I found entertaining was that Wan says that while he loves horror movies, he considers it therapy to make them since he’s actually a “chicken-shit” and scares very easily. He also went on to say that The Conjuring is more grounded in reality, unlike Insidious, which makes it scarier. He also wanted to pay tribute to the old ghost films and wanted to bring people back in time to the 1970s, using no CGI in the film for scares, just practical effects and tactics.
Lastly, while Wan enjoys his horror he might only have one more ghost story in him as he said he’d like to explore other genres. He would really love to make a big budget action movie and says his dream project would be to make a Ghost Recon action film or something close to it. Hopefully if The Conjuring does well he will get that opportunity.
The Conjuring has tested really well thus far and Warner Bros has so much faith in it that it bumped the film from February to July 19, 2013, right smack in the middle of the summer. Keep this one on your radar as this one’s going to scare the crap out of you.
In case you didn’t notice, the above is a look at the official logo for the film.
