Though most people think of Vin Diesel as the tough guy in the Fast and Furious movies, fans of Diesel know that he’s a nut about fantasy and sci-fi. At the same time, Elijah Wood is something of a fantasy icon himself from playing Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings movies. So when those two pair up with Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones for a sci-fi/fantasy film titled The Last Witch Hunter, they’re definitely heading to New York Comic-Con to sell it to fans. The trio of actors were joined by The Last Witch Hunter director Breck Eisner (The Crazies) at Comic-Con on Saturday to promote the upcoming movie.
Of the four, Diesel received the loudest ovation, probably because he voiced the now-beloved Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Diesel had as much enthusiasm as the crowd because he told them that he finally found a fantasy film that he could star in. In The Last Witch Hunter, Diesel plays Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter who has lived throughout civilization’s rise and fall and is about his battles against plague-bringing witches in post-apocalyptic New York City. Interestingly enough, the main character was partially based on Diesel’s Dungeons & Dragons character (Diesel is an avid D&D player). Diesel called the opportunity to play Kaulder a “dream come true.”
Kaulder reluctantly teams up with a witch to stop the plague, which is where Rose Leslie’s character Chloe. One of the clips show involved Chloe helping Kaulder explore the dream world. Meanwhile, Wood portrays Dolan the 37th, a priest who assists the Witch Hunter. He had the opportunity to act with Michael Caine, who plays Dolan the 36th.
Diesel also touched upon his continuing desire to play Carthaginian general Hannibal in a “trilogy” of films. Diesel also talked about his excitement for Fast 8, which will see Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray join the franchise. On top of that, Diesel said that executives were already planning The Last Witch Hunter 2.
