Oasis — the throwback 1990s Britpop band featuring brothers Liam and Noel — broke up a few years ago, and despite the ever-feuding brothers fronting their own bands now it seems like singer Liam Gallagher has a bit of extra time on his hands to pursue film projects.
Yahoo Movies reports that Liam’s ‘In 1 Productions’ is planning to produce an adaptation of The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary of the Beatles, Their Million-dollar Apple Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall, the 1973 chronicle of Apple Corps, the record label founded by The Beatles. The freewheeling way the company was run — come on, think of how much money that company had to burn — in the the late 60s and early 70s is a fascinating story of sex, drugs, and rock and roll and would make a great period piece.
There’s nothing concrete on the film yet, but Liam Gallagher is upfront about wanting Johnny Depp for the role of Derek Taylor, the publicist of The Beatles, whom Gallagher describes as “a dude. He’s up there with Lennon.” Well, that certainly provides a lot of detail, I guess. Depp actually played guitar on “Fade In-Out” off the 1997 Be Here Now Oasis album, so it’s not so far-fetched, really.
IMDB has the film down as a 2012 release, which is possible sinceDepp really doesn’t have much slated for 2012 except Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, which is currently filming, although Deppis committed to other projects in pre production like The Thin Man and The Lone Ranger. Does he have time for Liam’s pet project? I guess we’ll see…
