Forget that it won’t be released for another 17 months, right now the biggest news in Hollywood is the casting for J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars: Episode VII. Though dozens of actors have been rumored to be included, Disney has finally released a final cast list. Also, Disney released a photo featuring many of the faces from the cast during the first cast reading of the script.
First, as long-rumored, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill will be returning to their iconic roles, with Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2-D2) also returning. Hey, what about Lando?
There are also plenty of newcomers, but no word on what their specific roles will be. These new additions to the Star Wars universe are: Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Adam Driver (Girls), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, About Time), Daisy Ridley (Mr. Selfridge) and acting legend Max von Sydow. Considering that Episode VII will be the first movie in a new trilogy, we can expect a majority of these actors to appear in all three films.
As per expected, we don’t know much about the film beyond the cast. We do know that Abrams co-wrote the script with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. We also know John Williams will be returning to compose the score, and long-time Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt will be fulfilling those duties again. Meanwhile, George Lucas will serve as “Creative Consultant”, which sounds like a limited role. Truthfully, I don’t think that will bother anyone.
Star Wars: Episode VII is set for a December 18, 2015 release. What do you think about the casting announcement? Let us know in the comments below!
