Are there any film buffs who don’t like those beautiful movie posters put out by companies like Mondo, Spoke Art, and Gallery 1988? If I bought every single one that I liked I’m not sure what I would run out of first — money or wall space. Now that it’s become a pop art phenomenon that Andy Warhol would have approved of, a few questions have arisen, such as why exactly poster art has become so popular and, perhaps more importantly for the future of the movement, aren’t there legal issues with making a profit from selling intellectual property that these companies don’t own? For example, I wonder what sort of legal mumbo-jumbo Mondo mad to go through with Disney for its series of Avengers posters (check out the awesome Thor one to the left)!
The documentary Officially Limited, which is now in production, will address these questions about the movement and let you finally see the faces behind the artwork.
The filmmakers are currently looking for funding to complete the project, so check out the film on Indiegogo and throw them a few bucks if you’re interested in seeing the end result!
