It seems as if Oliver Stone hasn’t grow tired of directing biopics of prominent figures just yet. The director of JFK, Nixon and W. is currently in talks to direct the currently untitled Martin Luther King Jr. project. Furthermore, Jamie Foxx, who starred in Stone’s Any Given Sunday, is in talks to play the famed civil rights leader.
The film, which is being co-produced by DreamWorks and Warner Bros., was originally written by Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) but is currently being reworked by Kario Salem (Chasing Mavericks). What’s more interesting is that while Steven Spielberg and a few other prominent people are on board to produce, it’s the fact the film has members of Dr. King’s family attached as executive producers, which is a difficult thing.
Nothing is set in stone yet and no offers have been made but this could be a very interesting film. Stone has a proven track record with tackling political and social issues in film in a controversial sort of way but I’m not completely sold on Foxx taking on the role of Martin Luther King Jr. He’s a great actor but I just don’t see him fitting in the part, I almost want an unknown actor to be the star. Again, these are just talks so far and there are some “reservations” but give it some time and we’ll see what happens if this project is able to move forward.
