One of the biggest films of 2013 both literally and figuratively, for me at least, is Guillermo del Toro’s giant monsters vs giant robots flick, Pacific Rim. Recently, Legendary and Warner Bros kicked the film into high gear with the launch of their viral marketing for the film, and man is it awesome. For those that didn’t attend one of the two major comic conventions this year, NYCC or SDCC, this will be your first real look at the monsters and structural look of the robots from the film before the epic trailer is released which, in case you wanted to know, plays before The Hobbit.
There is a lot of mythology and story behind Pacific Rim and this campaign is just the start of it all to help familiarize people with the concept and history. Pacific Rim graphic novels will be released next year focusing on Idris Elba’s character and the years leading up to the events that unfold in the film. This massive franchise in the making has a lot going for it and so much to it story wise that the introduction below is merely a taste of the encyclopedia that del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have created.
Below you will find blueprints of the Jaegers (giant robots), news footage of attacks, a leaked memo and a test Kaiju warning. Also feel free to visit the Pan Pacific Defense Corps website which boasts a world map and a countdown (which is probably for the release of the trailer).
First up is the test kaiju emergency alert system with the PPDC logo. There’s not much there, just your standard test alert.
Next is a news report chronicling an attack on San Francisco in which the public gets its first look at a kaiju. An important note here is that the video is dated in 2013 but the movie actually takes place 50 years later, so what you are seeing is the first ever kaiju attack and our first taste of some back story to the massive and chaotic future which we are being introduced to. I’ve taken a screen shot of the kaiju so that those who were not in attendance at the panels at NYCC or SDCC can get a good look at the kaiju even if it is in low resolution.
Up next is a leaked memo which states that men from the Great Britain Air command will be joining the PPDC Jaeger initiative and that these kaiju ceratures are a common enemy to all that live on earth.
Lastly, we have blueprints for a handful of the Jaegers that we will be seeing throughout the film so you can get an idea as to what they look like and what each of their specs are. They’re pretty badass.
First up is the Gipsy Danger Jaeger from the United States.
Second is the Crimson Typhoon Jaeger from China.
Thirdly we have the Cherno Aplha Jager from Russia.
Fourth is the Coyote Tango Jaeger from Japan.
And lastly we have a second Jager from the United States named Striker Eureka Jager.
UPDATE: Here is the latest email that’s been leaked along with a full translation below it:

Ramon,
As requested, I have completed the inventory of corporate financial portfolio. What is even more important, I have been closely following the crisis of the incident “Onibaba” in Tokyo. Each time is more urgent.
In accordance with our subsidiaries and shareholders worldwide decide that we are willing to divert $ 19,647,000,000 CLP to speed assembly Shatterdome Lima, which will host the next Jaegers, Tacit Ronin and Mark-Intercept Diablo 2. This Strike Group regional defend the southeastern quadrant of the Pacific Rim, from Medellin to Patagonia.
This financial contribution represents the hope of the American people. With it, the Lima Strike Group will operate from August this year. Without it, the construction will take three to six months. I would not scare him but K-WATCH predicts a high likelihood of another incident during this period Kaiju.
My professional opinion is that there is no better use of our resources to invest in PPDC. Please review the attached budget proposal is submitted for approval.
I trust to make the right decision.
I thought I was excited before but after the release of this content I’m even more excited for the graphic novel and film (though not excited enough to do a super mario jump off a chair and yell “yeah!” like some guy did next to Chris at the NYCC panel)
Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day and is set to be released on July 12, 2013 in both 2D and 3D.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
