I thought I’d celebrate Oscar Sunday by writing about a film that will likely have a zero chance of getting a nomination whenever it finally hits theaters: G.I. Joe 2. Now there’s nothing wrong with that — 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a fun action film with a lot of great “winks” to the 1980s cartoon series, and did well enough at the box office for sequel potential. In fact, Paramount has announced that Jon Chu will be directing the sequel. Not familiar with Jon Chu? Well you obviously aren’t a Justin Bieber fan. What am I possibly talking about? Well, hit more for the answers to all those questions…
Yes, Jon Chu, who directed both Step Up 2 and Step Up 3D, and also as hinted above, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, is Paramount’s pick for the G.I. Joe 2 director’s chair. I’m a bit confused because nothing in Chu‘s resume suggests that Chu has the potential to be an action director except for his obvious 3D experience — and let’s be honest, there’s little doubt that G.I. Joe 2 will be in 3D. That, or Paramount wants Chu to work a Snake Eyes break dancing routine into the film. I couldn’t say. Chu himself is known for his expertise in dance, so I’m even surprised that he’s interested in directing a clearly non-music related film.
The script for the film is being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Zombieland. Zombieland was one of the biggest surprises of 2009, and one of its strengthen was its script. That’s something to look forward to!
The as-yet untitled G.I. Joe sequel is penciled in for a 2012 release, but there’s a long way to go until then. Well readers, what do you think Jon Chu can bring to the film? Let us know below!
