It wasn’t too long ago that the only cartoon choices that you would see at your local multiplex were Disney’s latest offering and… well, something that was thrown together by a less prestigious studio that would likely end up in the discount video bin at Wal-Mart in two weeks. Then, once Pixar proved that computer animated films were viable, we had other studios like 20th Century Fox’s Blue Sky (the Ice Age series, Rio), Warner Bros.’ Animal Logic (the Happy Feet series, Legend of the Guardians) and DreamWorks Animation (the Shrek series, the Kung Fu Panda series, How to Train Your Dragon) jumping in the game with some quality animated films. Now according to Deadline after its success with Rango, Paramount has started its own animation division just as its distribution agreement with DreamWorks Animation is set to run out at the end of 2012.
This is great news for fans of animation, especially since almost every Oscar for Best Animated Feature has gone to either Pixar or DreamWorks since its inception in 2001 — more animated films means better competition, which means we can hopefully avoid another Pixar dog like Cars 2. If nothing else, I am sure this announcement means at least one thing: Rango 2. What do you think of that?
