At the “want it” NYC screening of Paranormal Activity 4 on Tuesday, I had a chance to briefly talk with its directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman on the difficulties of the sequel, the Latino spin-off that’s in the works, if this was their last Paranormal movie and their next projects.
With regards to the challenges of this production, keeping the ideas fresh and finding new ways to scare and keep the audience interested were the most difficult aspects.
When I asked about the Latino spin-off and who would be directing they said that “it’s a guy we’ve worked closely with on Paranormal Activity 3 and 4…ok, we’ll give you what you want, it’s Christopher Langdon, the screenwriter of PA 2, 3 and 4.” They added that he’s the perfect guy for the job since he knows all about the mythology and the direction the PA universe is heading in.
As a follow-up I asked if this was their last Paranormal film and they said “not necessarily” which means that while the Latino spin-off is a means to expand the PA universe, we still may be getting a Paranormal Activity 5 under the directorial hand of these two gents but, as of now, only the studio knows.
As for upcoming projects, the duo has their Catfish TV series launching on MTV soon and, per the above, may have plans to direct another Paranormal Activity sequel pending the results of this one.
Thanks to the Peggy Siegal Company and Paramount for giving me a chance to speak with the directing duo.
