Let’s just say sleeping is not an option. I could feel the BBQ chicken wings slowly rising up in my throat from anxiety and terror. Never has a yell of mine been so loud during a movie than during the final 5 minutes of this thrilling adventure. As loud as it was, it was nothing compared to the other screams and shrills of the audience members. I felt as if I couldn’t brceathe, my heart felt like it literally stopped, I was short of breath and couldn’t find the extra oxygen to take in even after the movie ended. Paranormal Activity is the scariest movie of recent years, and perhaps of the millenium, because it’s so realistic and the possibility that it could happen to you.
I watched premier screening in Boston at The Coolidge Corner Theatre which was filled to capacity for everyone’s enjoyment. This was by far the scariest movie I, and most likely 90% of the audience, have ever seen! Anxiously waiting in silence for what type of paranormal activity was to come next kept, everyone sat on the edge of their seats, silencing anybody who insisted on laughing or talking throughout the movie. The great audience filled with movie lovers created an atmosphere perfect for the shrieks that were to come throughout the movie.
Put simply, this is a visual ghost story that is very believable. It revolves around a couple who has been experiencing, for a lack of better words, paranormal activities in their house and is now trying to now capture it on film. The thing is that the woman, Katie, has been followed by this so called spirit since she was 8 years old, creating an aura of fear within her and her audience. The camera idea belongs to the husband, Micah, who is a lovable and very funny character throughout the film providing the necessary comic relief in between the horribly creepy night scenes. Each night scene is progressively more difficult to watch resulting in a lingering fear that can’t and won’t go away until the end credits roll up. It is shot with a shaky cam, home video style that helps emphasize the realistic nature of the movie. It’s almost hard to believe this feature cost around $11,000 to make. The two main characters (out of 4 characters total) and the director, Oren Peli, did standup jobs in their debuts and helped make this movie a complete success in my book.
I can’t, and don’t want to, give more away but I will leave you all with this: no matter your tolerance to horror, this will scare you, creep you out, and stir your mind with paranoid thoughts. Many people leave the theater shaking, freaking out, and short of breath, but no matter what this movie is too good to pass up. Peter Sciretta from /Film said it best, either see this movie with a group of friends in theaters or watch it home alone in order to get the full effec, nothing in between will suffice. tIf you want to see it you can demand it and with enough support paramount will bring a screening to a theater near you. Check out the trailer below and prepare yourself for Paranormal Activity.
