As Marvel continues to ramp up the excitement for their upcoming release of Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The winter soldier, it feels like more people are paying attention to the films coming much later in the pipeline, specifically Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man which is set to hit theaters July 31, 2015.
According to Variety, Marvel and Edgar Wright haven narrowed down their selection of actors to play Henry Pym, aka Ant-Man, to two people, Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with a potentially an unknown third as well. Apparently, Wright wants an “every-man” actor with a lot of wit to play the lead rather than have a bulked up action star similar to some of the other heroes. In fact, since they are looking to go this way it could provide a nice replacement for Robert Downey Jr’s humor should step out of the Iron Man role before Ant-Man and Iron Man ever team up.
I personally don’t know enough about the personality of Ant-Man to comment on the choices too much. All I know is that he is a highly intelligent scientist who figured out how to shrink and grow his body which he then utilizes to become a superhero. If they are looking for a wise cracking character though I think Paul Rudd could easily pull it off, in fact I think he’d be perfect for the role which sounds weird. Rudd as a superhero? Who would ever guess that but he could totally play a wacky scientist that manages to take a weird power and turn it into something extremely useful to protect Earth. Gordon-Levitt would be a good choice as well but he seems like a convenient fit and I think Rudd would be the better option.
Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks as more details are certainly going to emerge.
Ant-Man was co-written by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).
