One of the most anticipated films of 2012 — one that isn’t based on a novel or comic book, of course — is Gangster Squad, a crime drama from Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less director Ruben Fleischer based in 1940s/1950s Los Angeles. Starring Sean Penn as the real-life mob boss Mickey Cohen, the cast also includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena, and Nick Nolte, perhaps one of the most impressive casts in recent memory (and no, I’m not counting New Year’s Eve).
Entertainment Weekly has the first shot from the film, which really doesn’t give us much — Brolin is dressed in the typical era detective fashion, and Penn is likewise in the typical gangster fashion. Brolin has the cliche “You’re going to pay for your crimes” stance while Penn has the likewise cliche “You want money? I got money!” gangster-at-the-end-of-his-rope stance. Still, it gets my interest going — any time Warner Bros. dabbles in the gangster genre it usually delivers.
The film is set for an October 2012 release and is written by Will Beall (TV’s Castle).
