I love Quentin Tarantino films as much as the next film geek, but count me in the camp that thinks his last two (Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds) have been a bit on the long side (especially Death Proof, which could have used a good half-hour less of Tarantino’s well-known penchant for excessive dialogue). But his next film, the western Django Unchained, might be the perfect film for him: not only is Tarantino a huge fan of spaghetti westerns, but those movies are often marked by their visual style and little dialogue, which I assume Tarantino would intend to imitate. A Tarantino film that focuses more on visuals than dialogue? That’s my cinematic dream come true!
As a result, these photos from Entertainment Weekly have gotten my excitement up for the seventh (or is it eighth?) film from Tarantino. They feature Jamie Foxx as the heroic Django, Christoph Waltz as his mentor Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the villainous Calvin Candie, who keeps Django’s wife as a captive slave in the pre-Civil War South.
Damn, DiCaprio looks rather deranged there, like he’s going to do the ear-cutting scene from Reservoir Dogs with a hammer.
Django Unchained also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington, Sacha Baron Cohen and Kurt Russell. The film will be released on December 25, 2012.
