Today Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tweeted out a picture of himself as Roadblock in G.I. Joe 2, which seems to be finally settling on the title G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The Rock certainly looks tough enough for the part, and although this is just one picture from the set I can’t help but notice that it looks a whole lot more realistic than the costumes and sets of the original. Perhaps this film is as much of an overhaul of the first as we’ve been told?
Meanwhile Walton Goggins, who has carved out quite a career lately appearing in movies (Predators, Cowboys & Aliens, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Lincoln) and television (The Shield, Justified), is the latest name to join the cast. Variety reports that he will playing Warden Nigel James, which is a character I’ve never heard of (and I definitely still don’t have a figure of him sitting in my old closet in my parent’s house, and I have to have like 60 freaking G.I. Joe figures. Go ahead, make fun of me.).
The growing cast also includes Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow), Stephen Martines (Cross-Country), Ray Stevenson (Firefly), Adrianne Palicki (Lady Jayne), Joe Mazzello (Mouse), and the rumored RZA (Blind Master), Elodie Yung (Jinx), and D.J. Cotrona (Flint). Bruce Willis is still rumored to appear as the original G.I. Joe, Joe Colton. The film will be directed by Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never). The script was written by Zombieland duo Paul Wenick and Rhett Reese. The film is set for a June 29, 2012 release in 3D, and Paramount is counting on it to bring in major bucks to make up for the now-delayed Star Trek 2 (which perhaps explains the expanded cast).
