I love Piranha 3D. It came out of nowhere and served the needs for horrific violence, nudity, and humor that a teen summer blockbuster ought to — and did it all in probably some of the best usages of 3D since the current 3D craze began…again. Others must have agreed with me, since Piranha 3D became a hit in the multiplexes and not too long afterward a sequel was announced by Dimension Films, clevely titled Piranha 3DD. Although the film has already been announced for a November 23 release date (pushed back from the original September 16th), not much is known about the film.
But that’s beginning to change: Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the film, which starts shooting in May, will take place in a water park, among other locations. This is a clever idea, although I certainly hope it will still involve drunk, stupid college students acting like morons (what horror film would be complete without them?)
The sequel will be directed by John Gulager from a script by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dustan (the team behind Feast). Although he looked rather chewed up in the original, Ving Rhames is reportedly returning as Deputy Fallon, though no other cast members — new or returning — have yet been mentioned. The filmmakers better hurry if the film is going to be shot in May and released by the end of the year!
