For most movies, talk of sequels and franchising doesn’t usually occur before the first film hits the theaters, let alone before it finishes production or, lastly, make its way outside of the studio offices 10 months before its initial release. Now I had meant to post this last week but got side tracked while I was travelling around L.A. for the first time but it seems that there are big plans for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Monster vs. Robot pic, Pacific Rim.
Last week, Legendary Pictures founder and chief Thomas Tull spoke to investors about how difficult it would be to start a company like his in today’s economic environment and how they are thinking the time just might be right for the company to go public. In addition to that, he spoke about Legendary’s upcoming features and “hopes Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” next summer would become another big franchise.”
Now, this is pretty much all speculation on my part, but I have a good feeling that if Pacific Rim is even moderately successful we will most definitely be seeing a ton of merchandise hit the shelves, video game adaptations and a sequel or two. What I’m hoping for is a nicely pact trilogy full of chaos, destruction, amazing effects and good storytelling. As a result, this leads me to believe that del Toro has probably thought about this too and there is a chance that he already has ideas for a sequel and may also be working on drafts for a script.
Since he will be attending NYCC to likely show off some footage from the film, my goal will be to find a way to ask him questions about franchising and sequels.
This is one movie I’m really excited for and as more information becomes available we will be sure to let you know.
