Saturday will be the day for films during SDCC this year and with most of the major studios heading to Hall H to debut their latest and greatest. One film has seemed to have been over looked and to be honest, I didn’t even notice it while I was reading through the schedule. The film is M. Night Shyamalan‘s sci-fi film After Earth which stars Will and Jaden Smith.
Jo Blo pointed out the film while doing their run through of the schedule and the reason why it was over looked by many. After Earth has been shoved into a smaller room because of a few reasons. One being that neither Shyamalan, Will or Jaden Smith will be in attendance. Also, the panel isn’t really for the film, but rather the comic book that will correlate with the film. While this is a huge disappointment, we did learn exactly what the film will be about and what we can expect.
Here is the official synopsis from SDCC schedule.
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
Seems like a promising synopsis, however I have had my hopes shattered way too many times by Shyamalan so I’ll be keeping my guard up for this one. Can it fall in the class like Sixth Sense or Signs? I really hope so, but then we also have to worry about it falling into the category of The Village and The Happening which were a beating.
So what exactly can one expect from the panel if it won’t really be about the film? Here is the description for the After Earth panel.
Enter the world of After Earth with an in-depth panel that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the universe of the upcoming film and comic book. With the film now in post-production and set to hit theaters next June, screenwriter Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and director of photography Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back) will discuss the making of the film. They will be joined by comic book artist Beni Lobel (Spanish horror comic anthology Cthulu; G.I. Joe comic books; Torchwood: Web of Lies motion comic), and writers Robert Greenberger (Iron Man, Batman, and Hellboy novels) and Michael Friedman(Star Trek and X-Men novels) — the creators of the comic book After Earth: Innocence, which will introduce Kitai and Cypher Raige (played by Jaden and Will Smith in the After Earth film). Also joining the panel is Eisner Award winner Peter David (Star Trek novels and comic books; The Incredible Hulk), who is writing the After Earth prequel novel and also created theAfter Earth bible with Greenberger and Friedman.
Unfortunately, I’m not willing to take the chance on this panel and will be skipping it, hopefully I won’t regret it.
