After taking detours developing the slightly obscure comic book super hero Ant-Man for the big screen, Edgar Wright will be recommencing his unofficial series of films with comedic muse Simon Pegg for their long gestating idea known as The World’s End. The film will represent the third entry into their Cornetto trilogy, which started with Shaun of the Dead in 2004 and continued with Hot Fuzz in 2007. The World’s End is slightly different, as it does not represent a genre-spoof, but appears to be a more personal and intimate project, though one assumes still uproariously funny.
Universal announced at Comic-Con that it has green lit the movie by revealing its long-winded and certainly epic poster, whose list is an allusion to the destinations of a Reunion Pub Crawl, with, as always, Pegg’s Hetero-Life-Partner Nick Frost co-headlining the mysterious escapade.
There is a synopsis provided by Deadline, which states:
“The film starts 20 years after five childhood friends attempted an epic pub crawl. The friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.”
Sounds like they might be tackling genre fare after all, most likely aliens or the apocalypse, though that’s mere speculation given the spotty details provided thus far on the project. The filmmakers are aiming for a Spring 2013 release, with filming to commence this October, according to distributor Focus Features. It’s most likely being fast tracked in order for Wright to squeeze it in before his Ant Man dream project begins filming sometime in the next year.
