Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy is one of my all-time favorite films. It’s a violent, twisted chronicle of a man who was kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years and, when released, goes on a mission to find out who did it and why it happened. In fact, the original Korean film was an honorable mention on my Top 10 Modern Classics That Should Never Be Remade list but we know Hollywood would never let a good foreign film like this not get the English language treatment. As such, Spike Lee eventually came on to direct the film which stars Josh Brolin in the leading role.
Yesterday we got our first look via the first poster for the film. It’s a still taken straight out of the movie and features Brolin being released back into the wild for the first time with Elizabeth Olsen likely in the background. Apparently, the title treatment is in Brolin’s handwriting which is based on the letters he writes in the film but I really don’t buy that based on the lines in the ‘O’. Furthermore, three stills were released via the film’s Facebook page. You can find all the images below and start putting the pieces together if you’ve already seen the original, if you haven’t well, just familiarize yourself with what’s going on. Oh, and what’s even more exciting (or cringe inducing depending on your perspective) is that the first trailer for the film will be released tomorrow so be sure to come back to view it.
Oldboy is set to release this fall on October 25th.
OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.
Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.
