So forget the Sleeping Beauty we all knew growing up and any Disney attachment. Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) goes red in her new film, aptly titled Sleeping Beauty, under the direction of Julia Leigh (The Hunter), who also wrote the script. However, here we have the young Australian actress portraying a sex worker in what appears to be high society.
According to Cinema Blend, the story “follows Browning’s character as she’s offered the chance to completely redefine her image. She accepts, opening a world of untapped desire and shady intentions that may prove to be a little more than the temptress bargained for.”
Also, Slash Film adds, “A haunting erotic fairy tale about Lucy, a student who drifts into prostitution and finds her niche as a woman who sleeps, drugged, in a ‘Sleeping Beauty chamber’ while men do to her what she can‘t remember the next morning… She ‘works’ while drugged into slumber, and cannot remember her clients after they take advantage of her. The poster is a little bit American Apparel, a little bit Sofia Coppola, and quite pretty, but combined with the known plot and the look on Emily Browning’s face, there’s an uncomfortable undercurrent there, too. ”
As you can see on the poster, the film is presented by Jane Campion, Oscar-winning director of The Piano. Also starring are fellow Aussie Rachael Blake, Michael Dorman (Daybreakers), and Mirrah Foulkes (Animal Kingdom).
The Huffington Post tells us that Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikoswka originally turned the role of Lucy down, but Browning was able to scoop it right up. The movie will be premiering at Cannes later this year. Anyway, check out the racy trailer below and let us know if you think this movie will sink or swim through the indie circuit!
