I’ll be the first one to admit that there was a time when I liked Katherine Heigl as an actress. She hit it big on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, for which she won an Emmy and then went on to major success in movies like Knocked Up and 27 Dresses. So what happened?
The actress garnered a reputation for being a diva, complaining about her on-set hours of work, and speaking out against producers and costars. Since the two aforementioned movies, she has failed to counter this behavior with box office gold. Which brings me to my question… do we care about Heigl’s new poster and trailer for One for the Money?
According to IMDB, the movie follows “Unemployed and newly-divorced Stephanie Plum (Heigl) [who] lands a job at her cousin’s bail-bond business, where her first assignment puts her on the trail of a wanted local cop from her romantic past.” Doesn’t this already sound something like Jennifer Aniston’s lackluster The Bounty Hunter?
Also on board are Sherri Shepherd (The View), Jason O’Mara (Terra Nova), Daniel Sunjata (The Devil Wears Prada), John Leguizamo (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Debbie Reynolds (Singing in the Rain). The Last Song director Julie Anne Robinson had adapted the script penned by Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie), Karen McCullah Lutz (The Ugly Truth), Oscar nominee Stacy Sherman (short- God Sleeps in Rwanda), and Kirsten Smith (The House Bunny), based on the novel by Janet Evanovich.
To answer my own question: I care. I wasn’t expecting much of the trailer, but once I sat through all two-and-a-half minutes, I think it looks promising. My biggest concern here is that all the best parts of the movie are actually featured in the trailer and there‘s not much to look forward to. The dialogue seems witty even though to surprise viewers. Heigl’s supporting cast isn’t necessarily A-list, but perhaps Shepherd as a hooker and Reynolds as a witless grandmother can make for some good laughs.
Since blunders like Life As We Know It, Killers, and a short-lived and underwhelming return to Grey’s (just for the sake of wrapping up Izzie’s storyline), Heigl has been working on the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve due out at the end of this year. However, One For the Money, has been rescheduled and pushed to a January 27th premiere for next year.
In the mean time, Heigl’s The Wedding is in post-production, which also stars the legendary Robert De Niro and highly buzzed Amanda Seyfried. Check out the trailer for One for the Money below and give us your feedback. Would you like to see Heigl return to television? Should she take on more serious movie roles? Do you think she’s peaked as a comedic actress?
