While the Internet is full of sites where people can stream their creative videos, there’s still no better way for new filmmakers to get their work noticed than screening their films at film festivals. Dime Crimes #34, a new short from Rebel, Rebel Productions directed by Ed Hellman, is currently in its final hours of raising money on IndieGoGo to allow the cast and crew to market the short to film festivals.
Dime Crimes #34 features Doll (Ashlee Mundy), a nervous, bespectacled young woman who reads pulp magazines to “help her sleep.” Judging from the stacks of magazines that she has and the pulp art adorning her walls, she must not sleep much. A knock at the door introduces Bug (Jimmy Dalton), a mysterious stranger who appears to have stepped out across the decades from one of her magazines. He’s charming, but threatening — very reminiscent of the mysterious and sinister Arnold Friend from Joyce Carol Oates’ popular short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Bug intends to rent a room from the cash-strapped Doll and her boyfriend Jack (John Michael Wagner, who also wrote the short), but his mere presence has a profound effect on Doll.
As with many short films, there is much under the surface with Dime Crimes #34 that makes it a very intriguing narrative that shows what this cast and crew has to offer. In particular, the interplay between Mundy and Dalton develops a level of tension that drew me into the short completely. This short definitely deserves a lot more eyeballs watching it. More importantly, supporting the film would help open the door for the cast and crew to work on future projects of this quality.
For a $5 donation, you can view Dime Crimes #34. However, there are many other great gifts, including glossies of some of the original art used in the film and original music from soul musician Bosley, who did the retro-sounding soundtrack for the short.
