Robert Downey Jr. has completed his promotional tour this month for the comedy Due Date, but the actor revealed that filming is currently underway for the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s smash hit Sherlock Holmes. However, Rachel McAdams has appeared on several talk shows in the last few weeks to promote her new film Morning Glory, which opened last week, without any official mention of reprising her role as Holmes’ love interest, Irene Adler. IMDB still has the actress listed as “rumored” for the part, whereas Swedish actress, and original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star, Noomi Rapace is making headlines for her participation in the second installment. Hit the jump for more details!
In an interview with MTV News, McAdams reveals that the script is still in the works, and if scheduling works out, she would be happy to make a cameo, at least. Also, she says upon her return, “If I do, it won’t be a very big thing… It’s not a lead part.” We could wonder if this was a snarky remark on McAdams’ behalf for the lack of demand for her return, or just the mere fact that her character only appeared in one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels and would not serve the overall benefit of honoring the story.
Returning to the action-packed adventure of the famed British detective is director Guy Ritchie (Rocknrolla), Jude Law (Cold Mountain) as Holmes’ lovable sidekick Watson, Watson’s fiancée Mary Morstan played by Kelly Reilly (Me and Orson Welles), William Houston (Clash of the Titans) as Constable Clark, and Geraldine James (Alice in Wonderland) as Mrs. Hudson. New and exciting additions to the cast include Stephen Fry (Alice in Wonderland) as Holmes’ brother Mycroft and Jared Harris (Mad Men) as the film’s central villain, and Holmes’ greatest adversary, Professor Moriarty.
According to McAdams’ IMDB, she is slated for a number of upcoming projects, including an untitled Terrence Malick film also starring Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, and Rachel Weisz for 2012, along with a drama opposite Meryl Streep and Chris Pine in Welcome to People.
While the Sherlock Holmes sequel is currently in production in London, the cast and crew will be moving to Salzburg, Austria to continue. There is no official title for the film, which is set for a December 16, 2011 release. Also premiering that day is Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible IV Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise.
Since there’s still a year to go before we get to see the untitled film, Movie Buzzers will keep readers updated as more information unfolds about this project. Would you like to see McAdams reprise her role in the sequel? What are your thoughts on the second film?
